  Time for elevenses.

Gemma: I haven't started work so early in weeks.

Meryl: Yes, it's only a quarter to ten and we've been at it for almost four hours.

Gemma: Time for elevenses before we die of hunger and thirst.

Meryl: Great idea. I'll pop out and get some doughnuts.

Gemma: And I'll put the kettle on.

Meryl: Oh yes, I'm just dying for a cup of tea.

Elevenses.

  (1) We had elevenses at a small village(我们在一个小村庄吃上午茶)。

  (2) We never discuss business during office elevenses(我们在办公室吃上午茶时,从来不谈公事)。

I'll pop out and get some doughnuts.

  (1) He's popped out for a moment(他出去了,不久就回来)。

  (2) I popped into the pub for a drink on my way home(我回家时,顺道走进酒馆喝一杯)。

留意We've been at it for almost four hours的at字。

  (1) The two countries were then at war(当时两国在交战)。

  (2) I saw them at work/at play/at lunch(我看见他们在工作/在游玩/在吃午餐)。

Be at it的it,可以泛指工作,不必明言是什么工作,例如:He was at it the whole day(他整天在工作)。 She is fond of gambling, and is at it again(她嗜赌,现在又在赌博)。

What are you at? I saw them working/playing/having lunch和What are you doing?等。[NextPage]

A light supper wouldn't do us any harm.

Robbie: It's some time since we've eaten. I'm quite hungry, what about you?

Gayle: I'm a bit peckish too, but it's quite late and we don't want anything too heavy before we go to bed.

  Robbie: What do you suggest?

Gayle: Well a little light supper wouldn't do us any harm?

  Robbie: Such as?

Gayle: I could make a cheese and potato salad.

  Robbie: That'll do nicely.

It's some time since we've eaten. A little light supper wouldn't do us any harm?

  (1) He only drank water during his three-day fast(他在禁食三天期间,只喝水)。

  (2) He fasted in protest(他绝食抗议)。

  (1) We breakfasted at seven everyday(我们每天七点钟吃早餐)。

  (2) He lunched with his colleagues(他和同事一起吃午餐)。

  (3) I am dining out(我外出吃晚饭)。

Would you like to sup with me tonight?(今晚和我吃饭好吗?)

It's some time since we've eaten一语,It is some time可改为It has been some time,而since we have eaten也可改为since we ate. It has been two months since I last saw you(我有两个月没见过你了),可不要以为文法错了。
