I had to rely on the subtitles.
Carl: I've just seen the latest movie from China.
  Vera: Good?
Carl: Oh yes. It was about a family who lived in the late Qing dynasty.
Vera: I know you're learning Chinese. Did you understand everything?
Carl: No, not really. They spoke too fast for me to catch much, so I had to rely on the subtitles.
Vera: Yes, they're always very helpful when you're watching a foreign-language movie.
I had to rely on the subtitles.
I had to depend on the subtitles.' You can rely/depend on him to do a good job(你可以放心,他一定会把工作做好)。
I may buy the antique Chinese vase, but it depends on the price(我或许会买下那个古董中国花瓶,但要看价钱)。
Whether or not you will succeed depends (on) how hard you work(你能不能成功,须看你有多努力)。
(1) A baby is entirely dependent on its parents(婴儿完全依靠父母)。(2) How many dependents/dependants do you have?(你有多少亲属须照顾?)[NextPage] Violence is good box office.
Marie: That was a really violent movie.
Jean: It certainly was. There seemed to be one killing about every ten minutes.
Marie: I know. I began to get a bit sick of it long before the end.
Jean: Why are so many movies so full of violence?
Marie: It's because violence is good box office I suppose.
Jean: You must be right. Well the next movie I go to see will be romantic comedy.
Violence is good box office是一个例子,这里不妨再举两个例:(1)She isn't box office any more.(她不再叫座了)。(2) The scandal about the heroine was all good box office.(涉及女主角的丑闻,对票房大有帮助)。
He/She was a war hero/heroine.(他╱她是位战争英雄)。 The heroine in the movie is too meek to stand up for her rights.(电影中的女主角太过温顺,不能维护自己的权利)。
The movie is probably the biggest box office failure/flop of the year. His new album proved a smash hit(他的新唱片非常畅销)。
The movie does well/badly at the box office.
