It just remains for me to express our admiration.
Jules: Has everything been dealt with now?
Marcel: Yes, the casualties have all been taken to hospital, the electricity supply has been restored and traffic is now flowing normally.
Jules: What a difference from the chaos and confusion of two hours ago.
Marcel: Yes, for a time we thought we might have to call for reinforcements, but thank goodness in the end we didn't have to.
Jules: Well it just remains for me to express our admiration for the exemplary way in which you dealt with a difficult and dangerous situation.
Marcel: I was just doing my job and I'm very glad that there were no fatalities.
The car crash resulted in eight casualties(那次车祸有八人死伤)。 There were 174 fatalities in the plane crash(飞机坠毁,有一百七十四人死亡)。 His behavior as a student is exemplary(他的行为可作为其它学生的模范)。此外,请留意两个时间词组:for a time、in the end. For a time he hesitated, but then he made up his mind(他最初犹豫不决,但后来立定了主意)。For a time和for some time不同:for some time是说事情经过一段颇长的时间,例如:I've been feeling unwell for some time(我身体不舒服已有一段时间)。 I worked hard, and in the end/at last/finally gained a first-class honors degree(我努力读书,终于取得一级荣誉学位)。In the end和at the end不同:at the end指事情的尽头,例如:He died at the end of the year(他年底去世)。这个at不可改为in,而in the end之后也不可接'of+名词'.马塞尔初时以为要请求增援,后来发觉不必要,所以用了for a time、in the end两个词组。[NextPage] You're the tops .
Una: I'm so fed up with being stuck in the house all day.
Raquel: Well you can't expect to be up and about so soon after breaking your leg.
Una: I suppose not, but it is very frustrating. I can't wait to get the plaster off.
Raquel: I know, I know, but I've brought something to cheer you up.
Una: What is it? Don't keep me in suspense.
Raquel: It's a bottle of the very latest French perfume.
Una: Oh, how thoughtful of you. Raquel, you're the tops.
Oh, how thoughtful of you. You're the tops.
(1) In the field of plastic surgery, he is tops in the US(就整形外科方面,他是在美国首屈一指)。
(2) Catsup is tops with salmon(西红柿酱浇鲑鱼最好吃)。How thoughtful of you这一句值得留意。英文可用'形容词+of'来说某人的性情,常见形容词有good、nice、polite、rude、clever、stupid、silly、foolish、kind等等,例如:It is very kind of you to offer him help(你真好心,向他伸出援手)。
(1) It was good of him to go.
(2) It was good for him to go. I can't wait to get the plaster off. Can't wait或can hardly wait都有'急不及待'的意思,其后可用'to+原形动词(infinitive)'表示急不及待想做的是什么,例如:
(1) After three years of separation, she couldn't wait to see her children(她和孩子分开了三年,非常渴望见到他们)。
(2) I can't wait for the summer vacation to come(我盼望暑假来临)。 This matter must be dealt with first. The others can wait(这件事必须先做,其它的不妨押后)。
