Ice cream remained a treat for the elite until around 1670, when the masses were finally allowed to sample the delicacy in Paris's first coffeehouses. By the beginning of the next century, ice cream was enjoying tremendous popularity, and recipe books detailing its preparation began to appear.

Americans got their first taste of ice cream in the 1700s. It was a favorite dessert of George Washington, and records reveal that the president himself purchased a machine for making it. Thomas Jefferson followed suit, having learned how to make the icy treat while in France. He was the first president to serve it at a White House state banquet.
