Heel girl, heel! Sit!
Zoe: Is that your new dog? What is it?
Fay: Yes, she's only six months old.
Zoe: Are you taking her for a walk?
Fay: That too, But I'm also giving her obedience training.
Zoe: Let's have a demonstration
Fay: All right, here we go: [To the dog] Heel girl, heel! Sit! There's a good girl.
Zoe: That's very impressive. She came to heel and sat straightaway.
Fay: Yes, she's a very obedient dog.
卓伊：这是你新养的狗吗？是狗什么？
费伊：不错，是新养的，只有六个月大。
卓伊：你要带它去散步吗？
费伊：是啊，同时也要训练它听命令。
卓伊：可不可以示范一下。
费伊：好，看着。（向着狗儿）来我身边，来！坐下！真乖。
卓伊：的确了不起。它马上走到你身边坐下。
费伊：不错，它很服从命令。
给狗儿的命令，除了拙栏说过的Go fetch（去拾回来），还有Heel.Heel是'脚跟'.向狗儿说Heel，等于Come to heel（来我脚跟旁），也就是'来我身边'.英文成语to bring someone to heel即取'使狗跟着自己'的意思，引伸解作'使人服从'，例如: Some people believe that, with money, you can bring everyone to heel（有些人认为，只要有钱，谁都会服从你）。你还可以叫狗儿Sit（坐下），并叫它伸出前腿：Shake hands/shake（握手）。动物的前腿其实叫foreleg，猫狗等的脚掌叫paw，但既是和人手相握，paw就算是hand好了。留意shake hands由于是两手相握，hands必须用复数形式，例如：He refused to shake hands with me after I was promoted to advertising manager（我擢升为广告部经理之后，他拒绝和我握手）。此外，你还可以叫狗儿：Come here/Come（来这里）、Roll over（翻身仰）、play dead（装死）、Stay（不要动）、Sic'em/Sic him（咬他们╱咬他）。Sic是'攻击'或 '叫动物攻击'.Play dead 的play不解作'玩'而是指'假装'，I knew he was trying to do me harm, but I played ignorant即'我知道他想对我不利，却装作不知'.Roll over则是'翻身'，不限于用来说狗，例如：He rolled over and continued sleeping （他翻过身，继续睡觉）。 [NextPage] We had to have our cat put to sleep.
Cindy: What's the matter, you look as if you've been crying?
Betsy: I have, I've just come from the vet's.
Cindy: What happened?
Betsy: We had to have our cat put to sleep. She had a tumor which was incurable.
Cindy: Oh dear! I'm really sorry to hear that. How old was she?
Betsy: She was 15, which is quite old for a cat. But she really was like one of the family. That's why we're all so upset.

贝西说不得已结束了猫儿性命：We had to have our cat put to sleep.留意不要把put to sleep和put to bed混淆：put to bed是'使（小孩等）就寝'，例如：At ten, I put the children to bed（我十点钟安顿孩子就寝）。Put to sleep直译是'使入睡'，通常有两个意思：一是用麻醉药使人或动物失去知觉，一是把动物生命了结，一般会借助药物，例如：
（1） The anesthetist gave the patient an injection, which put him to sleep（麻醉师给病人打了一针，使他失去知觉）。
（2） The dog was so badly wounded that we decided to put him to sleep（我们见狗儿伤得很重，决定让他安乐死）。另一个'使动物安乐死去'的说法，是to put （an animal） down，例如：It will be a mercy to have the cat put down by a vet to end its suffering （叫兽医了结这只猫的生命，以免它继续受苦，实在是慈悲的事）。Mercy是'慈悲'或'怜悯'，所以'无痛苦致死'或'安乐死'叫mercy killing，例如：I told my son, after shooting the horse in the head, that it was a mercy killing（我一枪打在马头上把马儿杀死，告诉儿子说，那是要它死得舒适）。此外，你还可以用to put an animal out of its misery/suffering（使动物在痛苦中得到解脱）来说杀死伤、病的动物，例如：Our dog had rabies, so we took him to the vet to put him out of his misery（我们的狗患了狂犬症，于是我们带它去兽医诊所，让它安乐死）。
