I offered to muck out the stables.
Danny: I've just had a great piece of luck.
Fred: Don't tell me you've won the lottery this week.
Danny: Not quite: I've got a free weekly riding lesson at the local riding stables.
Fred: I know you love horses. How did you manage that?
Danny: I offered to muck out the stables and to help groom the horses for four hours every week.
Fred: That's not a bad bargain. It won't be long before you're an accomplished horseman if you can keep the arrangement going for any length of time.
Danny: That's my aim.
Don't tell me you've won the lottery、I offered to muck out the stables and help groom the horses. Don't tell me (that) …… Sorry I'm late." "Don't tell me you were stuck in a traffic jam."('对不起,我迟到了。'' I've got a free weekly riding lesson at the local riding stables就是例子。 He ran the racing stables nearby(他经营附近那个赛马饲养场)。成语to close the stable(或barn)door after the horse has escaped(马儿逃脱后才去关厩门)就有'亡羊补牢,为时太晚'的意思。 Mucking out the pigsty is no pleasant task(打扫猪栏的工作并不有趣)。 (1) I groomed my horse carefully before the horse show(马展前,我帮那匹马用心梳洗一番)。(2) It takes her a lot of time every morning grooming her long hair(她每天早上花费不少时间去梳理她的长发)。 [NextPage] We'll be taking her to the vet to be neutered.
Mary: Can I see the new kittens?
Isobel: Of course, they're over here with their mother in this basket.
Mary: There are five! Aren't they tiny and so sweet?
Isobel: Yes, they're only a few hours old and their eyes haven't opened yet.
Mary: Is this the mother cat's first litter?
Isobel: Yes it is, and happily they all seem to be healthy.
Mary: Do you expect her to have more in the future?
Isobel: No, we'll be taking her to the vet to be neutered as soon as she has recovered from the birth.
The vet neutered/sterilized our tomcat即'兽医给我们的雄猫做了结扎手术'.Neuter除了作动词,还可作形容词,例如:Our cat was male, but now he is neuter(我们的猫从前是雄性,现在已经去势了)。
(1) Your cat has to be castrated(你的公猫必须阉割)。
(2) Isobel decided to have her cat spayed(伊泽贝尔决定给她的雌猫结扎)。 Happily they all seem to be healthy.
(1) On his face was a happy smile(他脸上带着快乐的微笑)。
(2) By some happy chance he discovered a cure for the disease(他很幸运,偶然发现了治疗这疾病的办法)。
(1) She happily stayed at home(她高高兴兴留在家里)。
(2) Happily, she stayed at home, or she would have been killed in the accident(幸而她留在家里,否则遇上这场事故,就没命了)。
