He's got a taste for exotic pets.
Hughes: I'm always a bit apprehensive about visiting Peter.
Jeanie: Why's that? He's such a nice chap.
Hughes: He is, but he's got a taste for exotic pets.
Jeanie: I didn't know that, such as?
Hughes: Well, last week when I was there he had a baby iguana running around the place.
Jeanie: A lizard! Ugh, that would give me the creeps.
Hughes: It's not my idea of a pet. But that's not the only thing he's got. He's had a three-foot python for quite a while now as well.
Jeanie: He ought to get a job in a zoo.
休兹：我去彼得家里时，心里总是毛毛的。
珍妮：为什么？他这个人很好啊。
休兹：没错，但他喜欢养些外地的奇异宠物。

休兹说，彼得有个奇怪嗜好：He's got a taste for exotic pets.英文前缀（prefix） exo-有'外'的意思，例如exobiology是'外层空间生物学'，exodus是'（大批人）前往外地'.Exotic即'外地的'或'有异国风情的'，一般带'奇异、有趣'含义，而所谓'外地'往往是指热带地方，例如：The coconut palms gave his house an exotic appearance（那些椰子树，使他的房子看来有些异国风情）。珍妮不喜欢以蜥蜴作宠物，说That would give me the creeps.Creep是'爬行'，例如：The baby crept along happily（那婴儿高高兴兴的向前爬）。有些事物，会使我们因厌恶、害怕等而毛骨悚然，那感觉颇似有毛虫之类在身上爬行，英文叫做to make one's flesh（肉）creep或to give one the creeps，例如：The ghost story gave me the creeps/made my flesh creep（那鬼故事令我毛骨悚然）。形容词creepy即'令人毛骨悚然的'，例如：That night I heard some creepy noises（那天晚上，我听到一些令人毛骨悚然的声音）。最后得谈谈That's not my idea of a pet这说法。Somebody's idea of something是说'某人认为某事应该如此'，常用于否定句，例如：（1） Taking unnecessary risks is not my idea of bravery（我认为，不必要的冒险，不等于勇敢）。（2） Her idea of a good husband is a man with a lot of money（对她来说，男人要很有钱才可以是个好丈夫）。 [NextPage] Why is he woofing and wagging his tail?

Eric: Yes, dogs have to be exercised daily, otherwise they get out of condition.
Jack: What's his name?
Eric: Rover.

Eric: Can't you see? He wants one of us to throw that stick as far as we can for him to fetch.
Jack: I can't disappoint him. Come on boys ,（throws stick） go fetch!
杰克：你牵狗儿出来，自然是要它运动一下。
艾利克：没错，狗必须每天做运动，否则健康会不好。
杰克：它叫什么名字？
艾利克：漂泊者。
杰克：这名字很适合狗儿。它为什么汪汪叫，摇尾巴？
艾利克：你看不出吗？它要你或我把棒子尽力往远处扔，再让它捡回来。
杰克：我不能扫它的兴。来，小伙子，（掷出棍子）去捡回来！
叫狗儿去取东西，英文一个常用说法是Go fetch!这fetch和bring、take都有'拿'的含义，三字用法有什么分别？假如你说bring，是叫人从某处把东西拿到你这里；说take，是指由你这里拿东西到别处；说fetch，则是指由你这里到别处拿东西回来。例如：
（1） Bring your dog to my house tonight（今晚带你的狗儿来我家吧）。
（2） I take my son to school in the morning, and fetch him from school in the afternoon（我早上送孩子去上学，下午去学校接他回来）。叫身边的狗儿去拿东西回来给你，当然应用fetch一字。读者也许会问：Go、fetch都是动词，两字怎么可以连用？按go、come二字之后，可用'to＋动词'；随便一点，可用'and＋动词'，例如：
（1） I go to fetch （或go and fetch） my son in the afternoon.
（2） He came to see （或came and saw） me yesterday（他昨天来看我）。比'and＋动词'更加随便的口头英语，有时还会把come and、go and的and字略去，例如：Come sit here（来这里坐吧），Go fetch就是用这省略法。抛物叫狗儿拿回来这游戏，英文有一个名称：play fetch，这个fetch作名词用，例如：Eric was going to play fetch with his dog when Jack came across him（杰克碰到艾利克时，艾利克正准备和狗儿玩掷物取回游戏）。
