Clare: My elder sister is always in demand at family parties.
Angie: Why, is she a good singer?
Clare: No, she plays the piano really well and she can play whatever music anyone puts in front of her.
Angie: I can play the piano, but I couldn't do that. How does she do it?
Clare: She sight-reads really well.
Angie: I wish I could do that, it's a great skill.
克蕾：亲友开家庭派对，都会找我姐姐。
安吉：为什么？她唱歌唱得很好听吗？
克蕾：不是，但她弹钢琴弹得很好。无论什么乐谱，放在她面前，她都会弹。
安吉：我也懂得弹钢琴，但不能像你姐姐那样。她是怎样做得到的？
克蕾：她擅长演奏陌生乐谱。
安吉：我真希望自己也能够这样。那是很了不起的技巧。
克蕾称赞她的姐姐：My elder sister sight-reads really well.Sight-read看到完全陌生的乐谱，即能按谱歌唱或演奏，无须预习或听过别人表演。这个字可以作及物（transitive verb）或不及物动词（intransitive verb），即其后可带受词（object），也可不带，例如：（1） Though he had never sung the song before, he sight-read it without any difficulty（他虽然从来没有唱过这首歌，但一看乐谱，就能演唱，毫不费力）。（2） A good musician must be able to sight-read（优秀的乐师，看到完全陌生的乐谱也必须能够演奏）。从前，说儿女或兄弟姊妹中较年长者，必须用elder、eldest二字，例如你有两个儿子，年纪较大的一个叫elder son；有不止两个儿子，年纪最大者才可称为eldest son.但是，今天older、oldest二字逐渐取代elder、eldest.He is my older/oldest son等已经没有人视为错误说法。而eldest的意思也有了改变：即使你只有两个儿子或一个哥哥，都可以说He is my eldest son/brother，不一定要改用elder一字。这和oldest不同：my oldest son/brother表示你最少有三个儿子/两个哥哥。Elder、eldest作形容词（adjective），一般只可用在名词之前，这和older、oldest也不同。你可以说My brother is two years older than I am（我哥哥比我大两岁），但不可以说elder than. 尼尔称赞哈里说：You look so fit and trim.Trim作动词，指'修剪'，例如She trimmed her nails即'她修剪指甲'.作形容词，trim可指身材健美，例如：He exercised hard to keep trim（他努力做运动，保持健美）。
哈里告诉尼尔：Stick at it and you can be the same.Stick作动词，可以指'黏住'，例如He stuck a stamp on the envelope（他贴了一枚邮票在信封上）。引申其义，stick at/to something即'持之以恒'，例如：
（1） He stuck at/to it till he succeeded（他锲而不舍，直到成功）。
（2） Whatever happens, stick at/to your job and don't let your attention wander（无论发生什么事，继续做你的工作，不要分心）。留意stick at一词，用于否定句，有'不择手段'、'不因……而罢手'的意思，常见于stick at nothing这词组（phrase），例如：He won't stick at lying/violence/murder to achieve his purpose（他为达目的，会不惜说谎/使用暴力/密谋杀人）。要说某人做什么事都没有恒心，可以说He sticks to nothing，不可说He sticks at nothing.Stick at it and……的and字，是用来表示结果，有'只要……就'的意思。这是and的一个常见用法，例如：
（1） Move, and you are dead（你一动，就没命）。
（2） One false step, and all that we have done will go down the drain（稍有差池，我们一切工作就会付诸流水）。
