He’s definitely not in the running for the job.
Oliver: Do you know who's being considered for the director's job?
Franz: I think one or two senior people in my department may well be.
Oliver: I know for a fact that Margaret Naylor is on the list.
  Franz: What about Henry King?
Oliver: He's definitely not in the running for the job because he
  hasn't got enough experience yet.
Franz: But I think he should be worth considering for promotion in a couple years' time.
He is definitely not in the running for the job一语,假如删去in the二字,意思会有什么分别? He announced his intention to run for the presidency(他宣布有意竞逐总统职位)。 He made a run for the presidency(他竞逐总统职位)。He is definitely not running for the job即‘他绝对没有竞逐这个职位’。成语in the running却是‘很有机会获胜’的意思;‘完全没有机会’或‘被淘汰’,则是out of the running,例如:(1) Only three of the candidates for the teaching post are still in the running(申请教师席位者,只有三人有机会获聘)。(2) Lacking in experience, Henry King knows that he is out of the running for the job(亨利?
留意今天那段对话里for a fact和may well 这两个说法。 I know for a fact等于I am certain,例如:I know for a fact (= I am certain)that she doesn't love you/She doesn't love you. I know it for a fact(她并不喜欢你,这一点我可以肯定)。May 是‘可能’,加上well一字,则是‘很可能’,也作might/could well,例如:He may well know who that woman is(他很可能知道那个女人是谁)。 [NextPage] It really gets up my nose.
Teddy: It's been a pretty tight game so far, don't you think?
Martin:Yes, neither side have looked like scoring a goal so far.
Teddy:Except that one time when our striker was almost through but was fouled by the fullback. The referee didn't see it.
Martin:Yes, it really gets up my nose when something like that happens.
Teddy:Well let's hope that the ref will be looking the right way if that fullback tries playing dirty again.
  Martin:And then we'll get a penalty.
  马丁说,看见球赛裁判不处罚犯规者,十分生气;It really gets up my nose。这成语是以‘入鼻痕痒,将打喷嚏’的感觉以喻‘不快’、‘不高兴’,例如:The way he treats his aged parents gets up my nose(他那样对待年长的父母,令我十分生气)。说‘使人生气’,美语还有to tee one off、to get under one's skin这两个说法。To get under one's skin 当是指微生物走到你皮肤下滋生的不快感觉;
to tee off的tee,本是指高尔夫球场开球处,to tee off则是‘开球’,俚语不知为什么借用来说‘生气’,例如:(1) His insolence just tees me off(我看见他那么傲慢就生气)。
  (2) It really got under my skin when I realized that she was trying to deceive me(我发觉她要骗我,十分生气)。
Neither proposal / Neither of the proposals is acceptable(两个建议都不可接受)。
Neither of the proposals are acceptable,但严格而言这用法并不正确。
